Renga Arts produces and sells functional art built with reclaimed, salvaged, or waste materials. Located in California's western Sonoma county, much of our work reflects the East meets West esthetic common here. We try to create products of enduring beauty, a beauty that deepens with age. Much of our line capitalizes on the inherent glory of used, and abused, surfaces and materials. Each has a history, a story, a past -- and at best, an intimation of soul. Other works are made of new materials, though constructed in such a way to hasten the process of positive decay. Along the way, we hope to make some impact on the amount of useful material buried in our landfills every day.

What do we mean by "functional art?" We'll be the first to acknowledge the "functional" value of most decorative arts, such as painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. But at Renga Arts we strive to produce creatively inspired objects of everyday utility. Needless to say, a plethora of items fit into this category -- birdhouses, furniture, bowls, and planters are just a few examples.

In general, our designs are simple. This allows the materials and surfaces to tell their story. Rarely are representational themes employed. A birdhouse is a birdhouse -- not a miniature hillbilly shack complete with hound dog and jug of likker marked XXX. Not to say that our works are void of decoration and ornament. These elements just tend toward the abstract -- looking to zen, pop art, and folk art for inspiration.

Our product line is constantly being updated and expanded as we develop our network of artisans and suppliers. We welcome new work that fits into the Renga Arts style. Please contact us.
